Robynne Trifiletti

Freelance Graphic Designer
Volunteer of the Month, March 2016

Where did you grow up?

San Antonio, TX, Cape Canaveral, FL and Baltimore, MD.

What is your volunteer role?

Organizing the monthly Marketing Mornings Meetup.

What is your day job?

Freelance graphic designer

Why did you join the AMA?

I worked in event marketing for several years, and although my primary focus these days is design, I still recognize the importance of marketing and design collaboration in business. Being a part of AMA allows me to get to know local professionals and keep up to date with the latest industry trends.

What (or who) is your favorite marketing blog or thought leader?

I don’t really follow any marketing blogs, although I’m a big fan of Medium. I do have a few favorite creative leaders that I idolize and draw inspiration from daily: Emily McDowell, Anna Bond, Tina Roth Eisenberg and Ashley Rose. Check them out and be amazed!

What is the one thing you’ve been inspired by lately?

Adult coloring books. I’ve always loved to color and draw, so this is one of my new favorite trends.

Get to Know Kathryn Krol, Our February Volunteer of the Month

Kathryn Krol, Austin AMA Volunteer

Kathryn Krol

Marketing & Business Development Manager, Trimtastic
Volunteer of the Month, February 2016

Where did you grow up?

Munster, Indiana

What is your volunteer role?

I am a part of the technology committee, which is responsible for Austin AMA’s social media activity. In particular, I post content for our Facebook and Twitter accounts.

What is your day job?

I am learning that as I go. I recently left a position at Texas A&M University in Marketing Communications to accept the challenge of helping form a high-end trim carpentry, installation and design company here in Austin. This new company is a merging of three entities, and I am functioning both as a business development advisor and the marketing director as I am developing the new company’s marketing program from start to finish (if there is such a thing). I love it. Helping companies transition to the next level is my specialty.

Why did you join the AMA?

I wanted to network with a variety of marketing professionals who were not only serious about their craft but came from a range of companies, businesses, backgrounds and skillsets. I joined Austin AMA while still living in College Station because I liked the energy that came through its own marketing. Now that I have been a part of Austin AMA, I believe Austin has a lot of marketing talent that it hasn’t even begun to fully utilize. I wouldn’t be surprised to find Austin leading industry-wide marketing trends at some point in the future.

What (or who) is your favorite marketing blog or thought leader?

Lately, I have fallen in love with HubSpot. It’s my go-to site because it features smart blogs from a variety of marketers and has an eye on marketing industry news, tips and information—all with a visually appealing aesthetic and a light sense of humor.

What is the one thing you’ve been inspired by lately?

All I can say is that the year 2015 was one huge inspiration. So many changes and forward moves occurred that I have no problem believing 2016 will be even better. In other words, I guess it’s easier to say ‘change’.

Managing Director, Referrals, crēscō Network
Volunteer of the Month, November 2015

[/three_fourths_last]

Where did you grow up?

The majority of my life… Austin. This is my third time to live here. I have always said that Austin is where my heart is. My final move, 15 years ago, was made permanent when I reconnected with and married my high school crush. I have bounced Austin/Dallas and back to Austin.

What is your volunteer role?

Health Care Special Interest Group

What is your day job?

Healthcare Practice Growth Advocate as Managing Director at crēscō Network.
I customize proven healthcare marketing strategies to individual specialty practices that grow current referral base and bring new referral sources through relationships.

Why did you join the AMA?

I had been very active with the AMA while with Getty Images a couple of years ago until I went back into Healthcare. I had remember there was a Healthcare SIG and wanted to get back involved. The single most difficult thing to find is an association that promotes healthcare marketing and this SIG is perfect support to incorporate new and better ideas to grow my client’s practice footprint. I have found that the AMA provides the necessary resources and networking opportunities to help my clients and if they don’t have them available, they will help you get them. Thank you AMA!

What (or who) is your favorite marketing blog or thought leader?

The Advisory Board Company Blogs specifically The Growth Channel and Physicians Practice online Magazine (part of UBM Medica Network).

What is the one thing you’ve been inspired by lately?

Doctors and Practice Managers. Among all the healthcare related changes, those independent practice physicians and practice managers who put their head down and execute their way through the education required to manage a practice and monumental challenges from government mandates to the healthcare system mergers and acquisitions that effect creating the best patient experience and health.

I grew up here in Austin.

What is your volunteer role?

My role is Director of Email Marketing on the communications committee. I am very passionate about email marketing and still after so many years very intrigued with all of the layers.

What is your day job?

I am currently a Senior Account Manager with Epsilon. I manage North America consumer emails for the Dell account.

Why did you join the AMA?

One of my goals of 2014 was to get involved and volunteer with a reputable organization. Since I love email marketing, I knew that I can contribute my expertise and possibly gain new experiences as well.

Why did you join AMA?

Being part of an in-house marketing division within a large company meant working with my marketing colleagues mostly on a virtual basis, so initially I sought out the Austin AMA as a way to connect face-to-face with other marketing professionals in Austin. I have always found Austin AMA to be a great catalyst for connecting with experts who are open to brainstorming and talking through solutions to business challenges, both common and unique. One of the greatest benefits of membership has been the relationships built working on chapter programs, as well as the exposure to a national network of colleagues involved in chapters across the country.

Why did you join AMA?

When I moved to Austin three years ago, I worked remotely for my company in New York. Not wanting to be destined for a life of pj-wearing solitude, I joined the AMA to meet local people who did what I did for a living. What I found was a great group of people I’ve come to know socially, as well as an amazing professional network that emboldened me to start my own business. The reason I keep my membership up-to-date is admittedly selfish – AMA is quite simply the best way I know to build relationships and sharpen my skills as a solo-preneur.

What’s your favorite go-to marketing blog?

Hubspot for almost everything that helps me do my job. For inspiration, my two favorites are Maria Popova’s BrainPickings and Austin Kleon’s newsletter.

Why did you join AMA?

Having attended both college and grad school on the east coast and working for over 15 years in NYC, I had very strong personal and professional ties there. Although my move to Austin was to pursue a new professional opportunity, shortly after moving here, I realized I was lacking the professional network I needed to be successful. After attending 2-3 AMA events, I realized this was an excellent organization to help me build my professional network both locally as well as nationally.

What’s your favorite go-to marketing blog?

Sadly, I don’t have any favorite sites yet; I’m still looking. However, for inspiration, I think SXSW Interactive is outstanding! They had a great marketing track this year and each year it seems to be growing. After attending this year I came back with so many fresh ideas, I felt inspired and couldn’t wait to incorporate this experience into my work.

What’s your favorite food truck?

WOW – this is hard, I LOVE food trucks, but…”The Peached Tortilla” has been my long standing favorite.

Austin AMA Volunteer of the Year Matthew Lemke

Meet Austin AMA’s Volunteer of the Year: Matthew Lemke

If you’ve attended an event with the Austin AMA, you’ve probably seen Matthew Lemke. A man of many hats, Matthew has volunteered in membership and events capacities since he joined the AMA in 2009 — but maybe what he’s most known for is as the guy behind the camera. As photography sponsor, Matthew Lemke captures many of the AMA Austin’s events, takes headshots of the board members and captures members’ testimonials through his exceptional video work.

In recognition of his ample services to the Austin AMA, Matt was recently recognized as our Volunteer of the Year at the Marketing Jam 2015. It was a recognition well-deserved, said Susan Andrus, previous president of the Austin AMA:

“What makes this guy so incredibly fantastic is that there is no member of the Austin AMA family who doesn’t call him a friend,” she said at the Marketing Jam in June 2015. “He greets all of us with hugs, handshakes and hello’s whenever we see him. He’s always down to grab coffee or lunch to discuss marketing initiatives, whether it be for AMA or each of our businesses. And our VOY can be seen at most of our events, whether he’s scheduled to shoot them or not. Because of him and volunteers like him, you always know you will know someone when you come to an Austin AMA event.”

We caught up with Matt to learn a little more about the man behind those amazing Austin AMA images:
[divider line_type=”Full Width Line” custom_height=”10″]

Where are you from originally, and when/how did you get to Austin?

I grew up in Santiago, Chile until I was about 10, then moved to El Paso, where my parents still live. I moved to Austin in 1987 to attend UT and never left!

What is your volunteer role and when did you start getting involved?

I started volunteering as soon as I joined AMA in April 2009, on the membership committee. I went on to serve two years as the VP of Membership.

What is your day job?

I am a commercial photographer and video producer.

[one_whole boxed=”true” centered_text=”true”] Photo gallery by Austin Photographer Matthew Lemke, www.matthewlemke.com.
[/one_whole]

When and why did you join the AMA?

Quite simply to promote my business. Along the way I’ve made some great relationships and learned a lot about marketing!

What (or who) is your favorite marketing blog or thought leader?

Well honestly, the AMA events (luncheons, SIGs, etc.) are my main source of marketing info. Otherwise, I focus on photography-specific news sources.

What is the one thing you’ve been inspired by lately?

Brené Brown’s book, Daring Greatly. That and Tacodeli’s doña hot sauce; it’ll remind you that you’re alive.

You’ve got a free afternoon in Austin. Where do you go?

I would go mountain biking, either at Walnut Creek Park or Brushy Creek Park, possibly the Greenbelt.

Describe yourself in one word:

Trustworthy. If I could just nail down “Clean” and “Reverent” I could be a Boy Scout again!

You can find Matthew on his website, LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram.

Melissa Glass

Marketing Senior Manager, Holtzman Partners
Volunteer of the Month, July 2015

[/three_fourths_last] [divider line_type=”Full Width Line” custom_height=”15″]

Where did you grow up?

For the most part – South Carolina (13 years). Before moving to Austin, I lived and worked in the Washington, DC area for nine years.

What is your volunteer role?

Currently – an ad-hoc volunteer perhaps? I was recently the VP of member retention – filling in mid-year for a vacant position. Prior to that I was on the social media committee, and helped secure a speaker for a SIG luncheon.

What is your day job?

I help Holtzman Partners, an Austin-based public accounting firm of 55+ people, explain our service offerings to prospective and current clients; promote our firm to job seekers, and keep team members connected through internal communications. I also head up our alumni and volunteer programs and assist with our health and wellness initiatives. On a regular basis, I’m either planning or writing editorial for the website and newsletters, drafting up client proposals, managing the design process for various projects or planning events.

Why did you join the AMA?

I learned about the organization when I was in college, and I found it to be a great way to create deeper relationships with other marketers. As a volunteer, it’s the perfect place to share my skills and grow them, as well.

What (or who) is your favorite marketing blog or thought leader?

I admire Don Schultz, “the father of IMC.” It’s because of him that my undergraduate and master’s programs came into existence. If it weren’t for his teachings, I’d probably be in a different profession.

Describe yourself in one word.

Interested.
(As in, people interest me – their stories, their jobs, why they think the way they do, etc.).

Get to Know Katharine Rovinsky, Our June Volunteer of the Month

Katharine Rovinsky, Austin AMA Volunteer of the Month, June 2015

Katharine Rovinsky, Austin AMA Director of Volunteer Engagement

A self-proclaimed data nerd, Katharine works in market research, supporting clients in technology, finance and energy. Originally from northeastern Pennsylvania, Katharine and her husband moved to Austin after stints in Orlando and Chicago. Having studied urban planning, she takes an unusually keen interest in the transportation, politics and tourism of every place she visits. Here in Austin, she enjoys bar trivia, swimming, hiking and outdoor events.

As director of volunteer engagement, Katharine helps connect members to our committees. She’s eager to hear from members who are looking to get involved and grow their local network.

Why did you join the AMA?

I work from home, which gets lonely. I joined AMA to connect with other professionals.

Where do you go for marketing information and thought leadership online?

I tend to read up on clients’ industries such as BAI Banking Strategies and E-SOURCE for energy.

What is the one thing you’ve been inspired by lately?

I love tacky outdoor advertising. When I see all of the neon signs in Austin – I wish I had the skills to design something like that.

What is one word you’d use to describe yourself?

Intense. “Too seriously”…“only a game”… in my heart, there is no such thing.

American Marketing Association Recognizes Austin Chapter

 By Angela Brutsché

Every summer across North America, local and regional chapters of the American Marketing Association (AMA) submit award entries to be considered for a coveted Chapter Excellence Award (CEA). The process for assembling statistics, samples and surveys can be long and arduous as chapter leaders recount the goals established for the year and measure them against final outcomes. In doing so, we compose a story which illustrates the year’s journey – documenting the big wins and challenges we encountered along the way.

Austin AMA is honored

We are pleased to announce that AMA recently recognized the Austin, Texas chapter for Overall Leadership Excellence in 2012. This marks the second year Austin AMA received recognition in the leadership category, meaning that volunteers are effectively sharing knowledge and nurturing skills to help future leaders succeed while practicing the financial responsibility necessary to achieve long-term stability. With a deep and talented pool of volunteers, our local marketing association is poised to see significant growth while members gain increased member value. Thank you for your support as we continue to strengthen our local marketing community.

Momentum is building

In the coming year, we plan to host a marketing summit in Austin that draws marketers from across the country. We’ll also continue to host regular monthly programs and further develop our special interest groups (SIGs) to meet the growing needs of our diverse membership. Current SIGs include healthcare marketing, word of mouth marketing and (coming soon!) professional development. Austin AMA’s Board of Directors shares a strong, united vision to bring marketers together and grow their knowledge and relationships. These volunteers are supported by a long list of past leaders who share a passion for marketing and a desire to contribute positively to the profession.

Success begins with you

We’re proud to be recognized on an international scale, and we’re even more proud to serve you — our members — who help advance our mission every day. Volunteers are responsible for leading important initiatives throughout the organization. Whether you’re interested in expanding your network or growing your skill set, Austin AMA can connect you with a role that meets your needs. Be sure to email volunteer@ascendmarketingtesting.site to get involved!

Angela Brutsché is the director of marketing and communications for the Austin Board of REALTORS® (ABoR) and immediate Past President of Austin AMA.
