AMA Power Lunch Series: The Impact of New Media and Research in Political Marketing | Thursday, September 16
11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Cool River
Featuring Will Franklin, Director of New Media & Research, Texans for Rick Perry
In the aftermath of the historic 2008 election that swept Barack Obama into office, many Republicans have “found religion” with new media strategies. The race between the parties to win at social media is on and upcoming social media strategies that will help win elections in 2010 and 2012 may make 2008 look like the Stone Age.
Governor Rick Perry’s winning primary campaign in March 2010 embraced new media strategies wholeheartedly, eschewing traditional and expensive political marketing strategies such as glossy direct mail, “robocalls,” and yard signs. The result was a win of more than 25 points down in some polls to a more-than 20-point victory on Election Night.
Will Franklin, Governor Perry’s Director of New Media & Research, will discuss some of the technologies the campaign uses and highlight some of the campaign’s success stories, as well as some of the limitations and pitfalls of emerging social media platforms. Discussion will also include how new media has changed the landscape of political marketing and campaigning and key elements of a successful political campaign leveraging new media.
